Background

The primary intent of the Montana Wildland Fire Base Map is to enable a GIS analyst to retrieve base data for an area of interest and be able to very quickly produce a Base Map that looks like a standard topographic quad map that is comprised of the most recent data available for Montana. This is accomplished through the use of the Extract Data tool. In addition, the NCLFA has developed and implemented a range of tools to make your use of the Base Map application more robust.

Tools

To begin using the Montana Wildland Fire Base Map, click on the Map Window link on this page.

Navigation

Navigate the map by using the Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Pan tools or by using the search functionality provided by the Search for Geographic Names tool.

Sketch Graphics

Use the Sketch Graphics tool to add custom graphics to the map window. You may add points, lines, and polygons with this tool.

Search Geographic Name

Use the Search Geographic Names tool to enter a place name and view (and zoom to) the location of that place on the map.

Find Lat/Long

The Find Latitude/Longitude tool provides you with the ability to enter a known geographic coordinate location and view / zoom to it on the map.

Extract Data

Use the Extract Data tool to download GIS data to use in a desktop GIS application. The download package includes:

  • A personal geodatabase (.mdb format for ESRI’s ArcGIS v9.3) with all of the Base map data layers available on the web map;
  • A map document (.mxd for ESRI’s ArcGIS v9.3) with all of the Base Map data layers symbolized to display a standard topographic quad map; and
  • A set of layer files (.lyr for ESRI’s ArcGIS v9.3) which provide standard symbology definitions for the Base Map data for use in other map documents.
